Hi friends!
I know it’s been a while— for the last 7 weeks I’ve been deep in teaching and course prep. It’s been wonderful and consuming. I plan to reflect more on my courses in the coming weeks (particularly after Week 10!).
But for now, I wanted to pop back over to my faithful substackers to share something I’m very proud of.
Building and Brokering: Solidarity Processes in Multi-Racial Coalitions is the report I worked on for my post-doc and it is live and in color!
I am beyond excited for this work to be in the world and forever grateful to my coauthors and interlocutors for their contributions and faith in this project. Shoutout to the P3 Lab, Hahrie Han, Jane Booth-Tobin, and all of the wonderful folks at Houston in Action. Shoutout to my wonderful research assistants Hadiya Ahmed and Devin Green for their research and writing on this project. And thanks to the brilliant Fresco Steez for their wonderful design and styling of this work.
This report takes a deep dive into the internal dynamics of building race based solidarity groups within organizations, what I’m calling “race-based caucus organizing.” It attends to intra-racial dynamics as well as interracial dynamics, the various distributions of resources, and access to power in the nonprofit world. It also considers the stakes of organizing in a place like Texas and the necessity for solidarity in such an environment.
Please read and share widely! I’d love to hear your thoughts and reactions.
Until soon.
